High-pressure homogenizer is a device specially used to pass liquid materials through a narrow homogenizing valve under high pressure, using strong shear and collision forces to break droplets, particles or cells to form a uniform and stable dispersion system. High-pressure homogenizer is commonly used in the food, cosmetics and chemical industries, and its application range includes milk, juice, solution, cosmetic emulsion and cell disruption.

  • High-pressure pumping: The material is first pressurized to a very high pressure by a high-pressure pump, generally between tens and hundreds of megapascals (MPa). 
  • Homogenizing valve port effect: When high-pressure materials pass through the homogenizing valve port, the valve port is very narrow (usually only a few microns to tens of microns), and the speed of the material increases sharply when passing through the valve port under high pressure, forming an extremely high shear rate. 
  • Collision and cavitation effect: After high-pressure materials pass through the valve port, strong collision and cavitation will occur. The cavitation effect refers to the rapid disintegration of tiny bubbles in the liquid under high pressure, generating strong impact forces, which can further break particles or droplets.
  • Homogenizing effect: After the above process, the original large particles or large droplets are broken into very small particles or droplets, thereby achieving uniform and stable dispersion.

Working Principle

  1. The working principle of the high-pressure homogenizer is to pressurize the material and pass it through the homogenizing valve to generate high shear force, cavitation effect and impact force, so as to achieve the purpose of homogenization and emulsification.
  2. Pressurization stage: The liquid material is pressurized to the set working pressure (usually 100-1500 bar) by a high-pressure pump.
  3. Homogenization process: The pressurized material passes through the narrow gap of the homogenizing valve, and the liquid is subjected to strong shear force, collision and cavitation effect, so that the particles in it are broken and refined.
  4. Refinement and homogenization: After passing through the homogenizing valve, the particles in the liquid are dispersed to the micron or even nanometer level, and the liquid becomes more uniform and stable.
Equipment components
  1. High-pressure pump: Provides high-pressure driving force for the liquid, usually composed of a plunger pump, which can generate pressures of hundreds to thousands of bars.
  2. Homogenizing valve: It is the core part of the homogenizer. When the liquid passes through the valve, it produces a violent physical effect, thereby achieving a homogenization effect.
  3. Control system: The high-precision control system can accurately control parameters such as pressure, flow, and temperature to ensure the stability of the homogenization process.
  4. Cooling system: During the high-pressure homogenization process, the liquid temperature will rise, so a cooling system is required to control the material temperature to prevent overheating from affecting the homogenization effect.

  • Food and beverage industry: High-pressure homogenizers are widely used in the processing of foods such as milk, juice, sauces, and condiments. Through homogenization, the product tastes more delicate and stable, and the shelf life is extended.
